Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) is ranked the 6th best healthcare facility in the United States and is the largest healthcare provider in Boston. BWH recently worked with Ver-Tex Shading Solutions to design and install window treatments for its newest addition in 2016: the Brigham Building for the Future (BBF).
With over 3,600 researchers, including more than 1,000 principal investigators and 2,600 professional and technical staff, BWH was in need of a top notch shading solution with the latest technology to fit the needs of its research and clinical staff at BBF. Ver-Tex worked with Suffolk Construction and MechoShades to install more than 1,300 manual and motorized shades for the new facility. While outside lighting can be a comfort issue in laboratories, it can also work as a functionality issue as well. Ver-Tex’s automatic shading systems allow the lab staff at BBF to have absolute control of the light coming in thus having an important effect on the laboratory’s interior brightness, energy efficiency, and glare. On the cusp of cutting edge technology, the building was also designed using drones, GoPro cameras, and virtual reality (VR) technology. A state-of-the-art laboratory enables the research and clinical team at BBF to go far beyond basic medical research and testing. Advanced technological systems provide new machines, medicines, and treatments that could potentially save and improve the lives of billions.
This outpatient clinical space and advanced imaging facilities is now home to many researchers and clinicians from across varied disciplines. The chair of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, James Kang, MD, hopes that a more open shared space will help bring in more structural support to collaborative teams. By partnering with Ver-Tex and the latest technology in healthcare, BBF is a space for opportunities to discover innovative treatments for patients with conditions such as Alzheimer’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and Parkinson’s disease.
